Purely a guess from me on your car based on experiences with other makes. On the ones I've seen there is a small fan to draw air over the sensor. If there is then most likely the fan has failed or the bearings are shot.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all the evidence and pretend you never tried :lol:

Good thinking Missing Lincs.

The unit is sealed and not really repairable, not really worth messing with when you can get a replacement from eBay (click here for link) very cheaply.
