Hi there!

I have a problem with my vehicle C3 VTR+ Diesel and hoping some of you might be able to help.

I have the most annoying knocking sound coming from under my car when travelling on bumpy roads. We have changed the shock springs but the problem still remains....it is difficult to work out where the knocking is actually coming from.

Any help gratefully received....

Hello

The drop links make a loud knock that sounds like an exhaust system hitting the underside of the car when going over moderately uneven roads.

They wear or just get loose, pick up a pair here.

They said they changed the springs, surely they would have seen that the top strut mount was buggered in doing so (if that was the case)? However, how long ago were the springs changed? Have the top mounts failed in the mean time?
I would not change the springs for a "knocking sound" unless they were obviously broken. I am not sure if changing the springs was to solve the knocking sound or for some other reason. The poster did not say. But then again, the poster did not say who did the work. Were they competent?
Assuming the springs were changed for some other reason and the repairer was competent, I would say the top mounts and shocks were checked and deemed serviceable. In which case I would go with checking the drop links too.
Another thing to check is the sway bar bushes. They could be worn or have popped out.
You also have the potential of lower control arm bushes and ball joints. Did I miss anything?

Had the same problem with mine, changed everything and it was still there. Quite by chance we found it was play in the end (nearside) of the steering rack.
