Hi all,

In thinking of having my pads and discs changed, they were last done 23,000 miles ago/3 years ago.

There is a slight squeak when I brake, but am unsure as to how long they last? I do lots of long motorway driving etc.

I'm thinking of getting the below, would they fit?

Thanks.

Hi

Pads and Discs can last a very long time if you don't use the brakes very much but stop/start town driving and frequent heavy motorway braking can take it's toll. The brake pad life is often down to the style of driving.

You can (and should) check the brake discs and pads are good and have a good degree of service left in them.

To check the pads and discs, safely jack up the car, remove the road wheel and the disc will be easily visible.

Look/feel for a raised lip of metal around the edge of the disc. This shows the level of wear because the lip isn't worn and by the pads.

Any heavy lip means the discs are worn.

Pads can be removed to be inspected but that is not always as easy as it sounds for a quick check, so the best ting to do is just get a good look at the edge of each pad in the calliper. You can get an idea of the thickness of the pad, but also check it is wearing evenly and not becoming a wedge shape.

As for fitting, the C3 was fitted with several different systems for its different models, so it is better to get the pads and discs be reg number here at Euro Car Parts to ensure compatibility.

This is a view of new pads and new vented disc shown with the calliper removed.

There is no lip on the disc and the pads are not worn and they are the thickness top and bottom

This is the sort of inspection you will be able to see.

The slot allows a finger to feel for a ridge on the edge of the face of the disc

You also get to see how thick the pads are.

The pads in the photo are still very good and don't need changing yet.

I wouldn't have work done on brakes until they are significantly worn. Our 1.6 HDi C3 was written off at 39,000 miles with the original discs front and rear. Our C4 Picasso has done 53,000 on original discs and pads. As stated before, this may be due to the type of driving we do, which tends to be mainly rural at ~55mph, and some significant motorway trips. There isn't much need for heavy braking.
