Hi all,
The leather steering wheel on my 1.6 16v vtr is delaminating and looks crap.
Been looking at either 2011 model or ds3 wheels.
I think the steering wheels will fit ok, but I'm not sure if the new c3 or ds3 airbag would work, or even if the plug is the same.
Has anyone on here retro fitted a ds3 or new type c3 steering wheel and airbag to a 2006 model ??
Thanks
Keith

Hi Keithw
Changing the type of steering wheel isn't a route I'd go down, especially where airbags are involved.
There are also other things to consider like the crash design of the steering column of which the steering wheel is a major part.
It may well be that what you plan will work, at least physically. However, the implications of something going wrong should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident are potentially very serious.
If it was mine I'd go for a like for like swap, or at the very least, a steering wheel designed for a model of similar age.
Also, don't forget that changing the steering wheel for anything other than one intended for your model/age of vehicle counts as a modification and your insurers will want to know about it.

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all the evidence and pretend you never tried

Unfortunately these unofficial safety related mods get sold-on with the car and the new owner isn't even aware that it may not work.Missing Lincs wrote:It may well be that what you plan will work, at least physically. I don't know how to test that the air-bag would deploy in any re-usable state and a lack of responses may be due to the possibility that it didn't workKeithw wrote:but I'm not sure if the new c3 or ds3 airbag would work, or even if the plug is the same.

Hi
All comments taken on board.
I bought a ds3 steering wheel and air bag.
It fitted perfectly without and modification at all.
The airbag plug was exactly the same.(blue)
The horn connector just plugged straight into the car connector.
All working fine, no airbag lights on.
Will call insurance company and tell them I have put a different steering wheel on.
Looks good as I have the vtr with silver gear knob and silver heater vent surrounds etc.
