Hope some one can help me to confirm the source of the grinding noise I hear from gearbox.

in idle clutch released or pressed no noise
in 1st 2nd and 3rd, in acceleration or deceleration I can hear a grinding noise, suspect of clutch release bearing
in steady state, constant speed the noise disappear

in 4th and 5th no noise at all.

Previous owner (sold me the car as is) was told it is not the release bearing but the input shaft bearing.

Can someone with some experience confirm this ? I would like to avoid replacing release bearing (and clutch) and leave me with the same noise. Either I would like to save me the time and cost for a gearbox stripdown.

Thanks
Marco

Hi mmd78

It is easier to pick up a second hand gearbox, in good condition than to recondition a broken one.
