After gear box issues last week I took the car in to Wingrove motors - Newcastle.
The actuator is definitely U.S. New unit £400 + VAT. They also think the clutch might be damaged and it's going to cost £320 + to take the gear box out just to check and another £100 + to install new clutch. They think there might be a gear box issue as it's having trouble changing gear but until they fit a new clutch and actuator they can't be certain. The car is only worth 3 grand tops. I really don't know whether to get it repaired or just write it off. I would value your opinion folks. Cheers.
Should I write it off?

Fitting brand new expensive parts to older cars, like the gearbox actuator seems a bit of overkill, when a second hand, yet working one will suffice.screeminjesus wrote:After gear box issues last week I took the car in to Wingrove motors - Newcastle.

I would consider finding a complete semi auto box from the same year, complete with actuator and possibly clutch if the mileage is low enough. Something like one from an accident damaged car,
<a target="_blank" href="https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481 ... w=lg">like this listing on ebay</a><img style="text-decoration:none;border:0;padding:0;margin:0;" src="https://rover.ebay.com/roverimp/1/710-53 ... ACHEBUSTER]">
.
Then get a price from the garage to do the straight swap. If the price is too high, try a different garage, a one man band may quote if they are not too busy.
When its all running, trade it in.

Eventually sorted it out. Big thanks to Paul Robbie's garage in Hexham, Northumberland. New actuator fitted, there was a broken worm gear in the old one, New clutch (as the gearbox was off). Replaced worn clutch fork bearing/pin (probable cause of problem). Result, happy wife.
