P1717 Gear Lever Signal Fault (CAN 250) Open Circuit
Sounds like there is an electrical problem connecting to the gear select lever, an open circuit.

It could be a faulty connector on the wring loom that connects to the gear selector, or the selector itself.

this is the gear selector on ebay. There are several ways to test, but an inspection helps find wiring and connection problems, then swap parts and test by substitution or send parts off to be tested or tried on another car.

Will have a look maybe I bought the car like this with this fault in the system as the gear stick trim, should I say the surround where the gear stick is, (only realised the other day when I was cleaning the car) its been loose ever since I bought the car, maybe the previous owner already had it looked at and then decided to sell the car on if it was a big or costly job or part to fix. How do I get to the gear stick wiring loom or how do I remove the gearstick in-order to access the cover and maybe try and put it back in place?

Quite possibly.

The wiring loom will be the wires connected to the gear selector, you will see them when you remove the gear selector.

I don't know how to remove the gear selector, but I would go about by removing any plastic covers that could conceal fixings and remove these, then see what is loose and work on the bits that still need to be freed.

Look at pictures of the selector that have been removed and it can give you hints on how to remove the unit.

:? I thought the gear lever knob has to come out first like the other cars...only I don't know how to remove it. Also today I started the car as its been a week since the wife last used it and as soon as I started it there was this beep beep beep and nothing on the instrument cluster like a warning or so, then I tried to put it in reverse it went beep beep beep this time with a snowflake sign and auto, the car could not go in reverse but I help and pushed tight the plastic cover by the gear lever and tried to put in reverse the car went in reverse gear without me keep trying 3-4 times to get it in gear. so I think this panel being loose contributes the cars behaviour on the gear lever shifting. I just have to figure out how to remove it and gain access to rest.
