A rather overly complicated system just to check an oil level :o

It certainly is, bring back the Dip stick :D

There are two types of oil level tubes. A plastic one and a metal one.

The metal one is shown in the diagram and the plastic one is shown in the picture.

The metal one has the bung inside the level/drain tube. The bung and tube have hex drives on them.

The plastic one is screwed into the drain hole then the bung goes into the hole behind the level tube. I believe you need the 8mm square drive to remove the plastic tube and the bung.

The operation of both is the same.

The auto transmission oil needs to be at or above 60'C when checking the level. If you check the level cold the oil will expand and the box will be over filled. Does it matter? I don't think so.

Yes, the box is over filled then the excess drained from the level tube. It's recommended that the box be over filled by 300ml then drained, but that's a lot of fluid to waste.

The entire car needs to be level, so just jacking up the front of the car is no good.

What is the colour of the fluid you used? It should to be amber. The specified fluid is Mobil/Esso LT71141 or a fluid the manufacturer claims is equivalent. Or, if you cant find an equivalent, the use of a premium fully synthetic ATF is recommended.

Results seem to vary. It works for some and not for others. Just because it works for them doesn't mean it will work for you and I believe either way it's not a permanent solution.
It seems 70% of the time the fault is the pressure regulator or torque converter lock up electro valves.
30% of the time its a worn out auto gearbox. If the gearbox is worn out a rebuild is typically uneconomical.

JAGPURR has a post on how to change the electro valves here

No, car now scrapped, I couldn't find any one locally who wanted to look at it let alone fix it, which was a shame the wife loved that little car

The step by step guide for changing the valves is easy to follow. You do need some tools and if you fit the newer solenoids then lexia is required. If you fit the same valves in as that came out, you don't need lexia.

Warning, the following is a rant!!

Why is it that EVERY AL4 rebuild video on Youtube (and there is a lot of them) is from a 3rd world country? Not one of them in English! Yes, I know, just because someone doesn't speak English doesn't make them from a 3rd world country, that's not my point! They don't speak English, and they ARE from a 3rd world country! Every gearbox rebuilt with a virtual carton full of brand new parts? So they can afford to rebuild these gearboxes seemingly on a daily basis, in a small country with a GDP of less than the change you have in your wallet? Not one of these guys hesitates or refers to a workshop manual, they know exactly what they are doing. You try pulling one of these apart and rebuilding it with no references!! So they have done this a couple of times before! Squat-in-the-mud Kreplachistan fixes AL4's, for a couple of drachmas. But here, the guys go "nah mate not worth fix'n, can't be bothered"!!!?????
Just an observation.
