The car changes gear as normal until changing from 3rd to 4th. It changes up then drops back down to 3rd then up and down continuously. Have tried speeding up to above 50 but it is the same. Have tried a replacement ECU which did improve smoothness of changes but problem is still there. We have been advised that possibly only solution is replacement box but this is not really an option considering the cost and the age of the car. Anyone else had similar problem. Thanks

Have you tried changing the ATF. The automatic transmission fluid colour you drain out can give you indication of the internal components of the gearbox. Even the quantity you drain out gives you a clue to what is happening.
Refill with this LT71141 (here) for the AL4 style box.

Thanks but fluid was changed a few months ago and was checked earlier this week. We have had the car about 3 years and have only put about 10,000 miles on in this time.

You didn't say the fluid had been changed. You also don't say why it had been changed.
Do you know the state of the oil drianed from the box?
You have been advised to replace the gearbox. A replacement is often cheaper than a rebuild.
Looks to me like you will be getting a replacement auto box.
