Whilst looking at cars Ive now seen a couple where the rubber infill pads located in the corners up by the bonnet hinges are really rotten, they look like they have been attacked by something, does anyone know what purpose they serve and are they expensive to buy?

If you can take a photo and attach it to the post, it may be possible to match that to a diagram and then a part number and even a description that may help explain its purpose.Stevek wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 9:27 pm Whilst looking at cars Ive now seen a couple where the rubber infill pads located in the corners up by the bonnet hinges are really rotten, they look like they have been attacked by something, does anyone know what purpose they serve and are they expensive to buy?

Sorry Arfur cant do a photo, looks likely we will be buying the car but we don't have it yet, Ive noticed these pads on later cars, this one a 2013 and previously a 2014, they may be fitted to the Mk1 variants but not sure about this. They are as big as your hand and just seem to be filling the space beside the hinges on the scuttle. On both cars I noticed them because they were so manky and rotten,,as though the rubber had self destructed,,

The large plastic part at the base of the windscreen that the wiper arms stick out of is called the scuttle panel. Also in the scuttle panel is the cabin air inlet. You can see the hole there in the photo. Normally this would have a cover over it.
The rubber moldings in front and to the side of the panel are to isolate the engine bay from the air inlet. They form a seal on the underside of the bonnet.
They stop fumes and hot air from the engine being drawn into the cabin.

Many thanks to you both, your help is much appreciated, not being in any way familiar with these cars and with just a vague recollection of the parts in question I must say Im still finding it difficult to relate the parts diagram to the photo, and I think I will have to wait until I actually have a car to look at for it all to become clear, though I expect your right in that they are probably there to help seal off the engine bay. Just as a matter of interest, is there a WSM or parts book available for download somewhere?
Once again, many thanks to you both,
Steve.
