Hi guys

you all know the trouble I had with old car, once all repaired then the coil went so just ended up selling (at a profit) so not all bad, I'm looking at buying another car and this time want to be a lot more in depth when looking. I know I can check the inside and BSI with diagnostic, exterior body work for any mis shapes or work done and anything not matching along frame work etc, I just wondered in terms of engine or best way to find out if any leaks have happened or how well the life of the engine is. What's the best way for this, also what else to look out for? Car has 73000 miles on it, it's an 55 plate. Budget is around 1200 and he's selling at 1100.

Because you can't look into the engine like you can with the bodywork and even the BSI you are limited to ensuring the servicing (oil, oil filter and fuel filter - for a diesel) has been done at the correct intervals. This is often called a Full Service History or even a full dealer service history and this is backed up with either a computer print out or stamps in the book by the garage that did the work.

The service history should cover the correct servicing and not just the engine, but its the engine that you can't really inspect very well.

The only things I could suggest for engine inspections are the oil on the dipstick for level and colour/viscosity and the oil filler cap for mayonnaise indicating a possible head gasket.

Listening to the engine for tapping or knocking can help identify problems and so can a test drive to check for power production.

Everything C3CAR says plus, when you go for a test drive (even if the seller has to drive because of insurance), check the car is cold before starting and ideally go early on a cold morning. Not a guarantee but can show up starting and electrical problems. If the car has been run before you get there it's not a good sign.

As well as service history you can check out ownership. Not always the case but cars that have been traded many times are less likely to be well looked after - can be a sign of a problem car that just gets passed on rather than fixed. 1-3 owners from new, FSH, low mileage and you're more likely to get a gem - they are about - our C3 was 8 years old, 30,000 miles and 2 owners, first had the car 2 years, second 6 which is a reassuring pattern.

For private sales I'd also research the seller if you can. Not an in-depth investigation but have a look at their ebay, auto trader, gumtree or whatever advertising they use and see if they've sold many cars recently. You can usually get a 'feel' for private sellers and if their front garden looks like a scrapyard well ...

Don't forget a finance/insurance/stolen car check, worth every penny in my opinion.

There's some cracking little C3 motors about, I hope you find one.

Ownership is important as Missing Lincs mentions and although not engine related it is still worth saying that an ownership/history/finance check can be a money saver. Try clicking here for a HPI check who claim to identify over 40 stolen cars a day, but not only stolen, they do the most comprehensive check on the cars document history.

Happy car hunting :)

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, the guy selling owns a private little garage in a fairly posh building, haha he said he'll even through in a month warranty for the vehicle as well as giving me the full hpi report on it. He had it Valeted and an indicator repaired, said that all the work needed on it. the reg is ND55 YVB did an mot check and looks like it had a fair few problems in the past but you may be able to tell me more as don't understand half of it.

The last (nearest the top) advisory items are the ones to be aware of because the fails have been repaired already to get the MOT to pass and old advisories have either been repaired or failed and been repaired - well that is the theory anyway.

you have:
8703 8537 Advisory notice item(s)
nearside rear Shock absorber has a light misting of oil (2.7.3)
rear parking (secondary) brake grabbing slightly (3.7.B.6b)
Everything else in the list is just 'history'

I would expect to see a repaired or new back box on the car by now ;)
1062 8264 5002 Advisory notice item(s)
Rear Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2)
Advisory notice item(s)
Rear Exhaust has a minor leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2)
Advise exhaust back box outer casing corroded

My gut reaction looking at the pictures is "nice, tidy looking motor".

As C3driver52 says, not much from the MOT.

Light misting on a shocker is nothing to worry about, you may need to replace the shock absorber in the future but that's not a big job or cost. If I was buying this car I'd service it when I got it, that's something I do anyway with cars that are new to me. It's a minor cost and you then know for certain everything is done and properly. That would include servicing the brakes, my suspicion (and it is only that, a suspicion) is that there could be a small problem with the rear brakes. It could be as simple as the handbrake cable sticking or adjustments not done properly.

One thing I would say from the past MOT history, not just for this car - it's amazing how often cars are presented for MOT with problems that will cause a fail, often as simple as a bulb not working. The MOT is a useful check but it's not hard to get the basics right so cars pass every time.

Thanks for all the replies and looking into this for me going to go view it tomorrow with there not being many available to buy in my area well ones that have lowish miles on it's been a little hard but another came on today with reg NL04 SDY with a full service history and on auto trader at £999 2 owners and recently had timing belt and water pump replaced, it's got around 53000 miles on it. This whole choosing a car business is rather hard but that's what I have to choose between

Come home to find the other half had been out and bought me the 55,000 mile car, really impressed with the full service history, has everything literally down to the little card with unscratched key code on, bearing in mind it's a 04 plate. Only had to repair left fog light and put the dust cover back on the left light as it Had fell off (there tinkers to put back on) but over the moon so far lol had plenty parts replaced lol don't know if that's good or bad :-)
