This power steering problem can be intermittent.
Try the car again and it may have reset.
If it has reset, get the alternator checked by any auto electrician or do it yourself
A bad alternator can trip out the ePAS

took all the plugs out, all gaps were a little too wide so I regapped them, three were very clean, number 4 was a little sooty. I also took the nearest (exhaust) cam cover off and had a look wondering if I could see any evidence of a sticky valve, nothing doing there but to really sure I would have...

The connector should just pull out now. The metal clip actually retains the connector onto the receptacle.
Yes, you push the metal clip inwards it releases the metal wire from the “ears” on either side of the plug, then the connector comes off.

I have a tutorial here on changing the cam belt on a TU3 engine. The process is nearly identical for the TU5. Of course there are 2 cam sprockets. Like the TU3, the flywheel/flexplate pin is 6mm and the cam sprocket pins are 8mm. Those pins I found for the tutorial will work just as well on the TU5....

I would recommend Gates. Although Dayco, Febi and Fai are good brands. Are you going to replace the water pump? Gates does a kit that includes the belt, water pump and tensioner pulley. All of those manufacturers probably do a kit. While it's expensive, I recommend replacing the tensioner and water ...

You can use 8mm drill bits to lock the TU5 cams (stick the chuck end into the cam sprocket hole). The crank lock is not really necessary, just use a good bright witness mark on the crank pulley and case before you remove the old belt. Your old belt may have witness marks on it already. It's not that hard to pin the flywheel, just a little laborious. One end of the engine to check the fly wheel then back to the other end to turn the crank shaft (repeat).
